Solstice Self Portrait
December 21, 2008
Today was the longest day of the year in Antarctica. Since the sun won’t set for another couple months, that doesn’t really matter, but the sun is as high in the sky as it can get.
In keeping with my rugged surroundings, I’ve decided not to shave this season. The extra hair gives some nice insulation, and, well, if I can’t bathe, why groom at all? Of course, I’ll end up with an interesting tan at the end of the summer, with balaclava, sunglasses, and beard lines. I’ve never grown it out past three weeks, so I took a self-portrait today to gauge progress after six weeks, with a month and a half to go. What do you think – was I born to be bearded?

Looks great – though it “ages” you by a number of years.
I’m growing mine out for winter here as well – snow in Eugene for the last few days.
We will miss your Gull skills on the Eugene Christmas Bird Count this year.
We will miss-identify a Western Gull in your honor.

The beard looks bitchin. You look like you’re in alternate-plumage now!

A face only a mother could love. Actually it looks pretty good, though as Jim Maloney points out it does make you look a bit older.

You look adorable! Though that may not be the look you’re going for.

You show an uncanny resemblance to a young bearded Sting.

Only the girlfriend’s opinion really counts, right? Your buddies back home seem to be having fun with this! My non-birding husband kept a bushy beard that often sported icicles when he worked on a fishing trawler in his youth. On one of those trips he watched a snowy owl on the boat for days a hundred miles off the coast of Maine. Now every time I miss yet another snowy in winter he gets to sing “I already saw one” over and over….

Hi Noah.
The beard makes you look different from when we first met.But then you were only ten weeks old. We are enjoying your adventures in the south. I want to go south, but not that far.
